Pets Corner get a makeover

Des res? Our animals move up the property ladder

One new project is now complete - the revamping of Pets Corner. And in time for the school holiday period. This redesign comes as part of our Animal Enrichment Programme, which translates as devising ways to keep the animals on the farm happy and healthy.

All the pets' houses have been rebuilt in a new and funkier style (just check out those loveheart windows; very chichi) and painted in lovely summer colours. The place looks fantastic - rather like a seaside holiday camp transplanted into the middle of the countryside. There are beach huts on stilts, allowing a private shady space outside when it's too hot to go inside, and each pen has its own set of toys, designed specifically with the inhabitants in mind. A jungle gym / luxury hotel hybrid by any other name!

Sundae, the resident overseer, says: ‘The animals seem to love it and we do too'. I agree. So come down and see it, why not.

Made possible through funding by various corporate groups, who also offered their invaluable help in building and painting the houses and toys, Mudchute would like to say a big ‘Thank You' to all those involved. Couldn't have managed it without you.

Meanwhile, at the other end of Pets Corner, we're getting ready for yet more new animals. This time it's gerbils, kindly donated by Pets at Home store in return for a demonstration about the life of chickens. A new, wall-mounted gerbil house, funded by a table-top sale, has already been installed and all that remains is to wait for the new inhabitants.

Seat with a view

If you'd like to admire the upgraded area in its full glory, then why not test out our new benches, which you'll find scattered around Pets Corner. These were built by City Wood Services, a green company who offer recycled timber products and furniture designed to your own specifications. In line with Mudchute Farm's ethos, their wood comes from sustainable sources. The oak in our benches has come from an old warehouse and the black markings indicate where metal sat beside the wood. The benches were made at City Wood by adults with special needs who are trained in the art of wood working. Again, many thanks to all those involved.

(If you fancy getting yourself some new garden furniture or decking to enjoy this summer, or even just a nice table, phone Danny on 07985 987 945 or email citywood2010@googlemail.com.)
