Are you an accounting professional who wants to make a real difference to your favourite local charity? Would you like to add a new dimension to your professional skills and apply them in a stimulating new way?
Can you spare a couple of evenings a month for a unique and fascinating volunteering role? Do you have an appetite for real responsibility as part of a board of volunteer trustees?
Mudchute was rescued from developers 30 years ago by the local community, who created the charity, and to this day Mudchute is governed on behalf of the local community by a very active Board of volunteer Trustees. The Trustees are dedicated to preserving Mudchute's 32 acres of open green space as a unique resource for all, with activities including the children's nursery, the equestrian centre, over 70 allotments, the kitchen, and many events both educational and recreational. There is a wholly-owned trading company, a staff complement of over 50 (including part-time and trainee placements) and an annual turnover exceeding £1.2 million. See www.mudchute.org for further details.
Mudchute is looking for a suitable person to join the Board and support it in the role of Treasurer, replacing the current Treasurer who is leaving at the end of June.
A full job description is available, but in summary the Treasurer is responsible for setting the budget for the year, managing the accounts, ensuring that controls are in place to meet legislative requirements, presenting monthly reports to the Board of Trustees, and filing accounts to the Charity Commission. Training will be provided where necessary and the current Treasurer will do a full hand-over. The Treasurer is not responsible for the day to day financial processing but will need an understanding of record-keeping using Sage and be prepared to be a cheque signatory.
The commitment is 1-2 evening meetings per month, usually on the Isle of Dogs, and liaison with our paid finance officer. Our financial systems are sound and based on Sage and we are fully compliant with Charity Commission and Companies House reporting requirements.
The Board of Trustees is very active and comprises mainly local people drawn from a wide range of professions, including the chief exec of another charity.
Our immediate challenge (and the reason for our search for a qualified treasurer) is that we need to think about how to make better use of existing fund raising opportunities e.g. through gift aid and legacies. In addition we need the Treasurer to advise us about a more simple but accurate reporting system for the Board than our Sage reports currently provide.
