July - Boxer the Lama

Animal of the month: Boxer

The Wonderful World of Llamas

  • Llama’s usually live in South America
  • Llamas have no top front teeth
  • Llamas are often used to protect sheep – our equivalent of a sheepdog
  • Llama’s have very long eyelashes – not to look glamorous (though they do), but to protect their eyes when pulling at thorny branches
  • Llamas have three stomachs to help digest all that grass and twigs

Boxer the Lama

Welcome to our new feature. Each month we'll be introducing you to our one of our favourite residents as chosen by staff or visitors. This month our pin-up is Boxer the llama, nominated by Cliff, his keeper and best friend.

A deceptively cuddly looking animal - just check out that smile - eight-year-old Boxer's likes include lying down and eating, usually whatever leaves or branches he can reach.

A dedicated attention seeker (llamas are very social animals), Boxer will steal your hat, pull on your jacket or nudge you to get himself noticed.

But beware upsetting him. You'll know you've done that when he lays his usually erect ears back against his head. Llamas are related to camels and share some of their traits, including spitting. Particularly unpleasant as they don't clean their teeth very often!

No reason to be afraid though. As Cliff tells us, ‘Boxer's just a big kid at heart'. So come on down and meet him. Any of the staff will be able to tell you where to find him.
