Equestrian centre update - June 2021

The Equestrian centre has been closed now for over a year barring a few short weeks when restrictions allowed us to open. As you are all aware an equestrian centre is not cheap to run with staffing, overhead, vet, farrier, feed and bedding bills to be paid to monthly. The equestrian centre has to make money to help it survive, over a number of years the income generated has decreased and the department has had to be subsided to plug these shortfalls of income by the other trading arms of the association, more often than not by thousands of pounds a month. The effects of the pandemic has meant that an increased level of subsidy has been necessary which – as a charitable organisation- we are not able to maintain.

Therefore our board of trustees have made the incredibly difficult decision to temporarily close the equestrian centre. This is for them to assess the model and direction of the equestrian centre with a view to maybe change its reach in the future.

Our horses will be going on holiday to a farm in the countryside until a decision has been made.

Mudchute Equestrian Centre is a British Horse Society approved riding school. We have a variety of horses and ponies catering for all abilities. The all weather floodlit riding arena provides year round riding facilities. There is a full set of show jumps and some cross-country fences.

Who uses the centre

We provide riding lessons to adults and children, from beginner to advanced level, on an individual or group basis, with riding courses and a wide range of activities available for visiting groups.

We take children from the age of seven, and have no upper age limit.

All lessons and activities are bookable in advance.

Range of horses and ponies

Mudchute Equestrian Centre has stabling for 25 horses and ponies. Most belonging to the centre and some are on working livery. They are well-schooled and most can jump. You can meet our horses and ponies here.

We occasionally have horses and ponies for sale.

Our instructors are BHS and UKCC qualified. Our adult riders can enjoy courses on Bank Holidays and also work towards B.H.S. progressive riding tests.

Pony Days

During the school holidays we run full-day programs for children, which include two riding sessions and stable management lectures. The kids will learn tasks such as grooming, mucking out, tacking up, parts and colours of the horses and feeding. Sessions run from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and are £70 per child with a £1.50 charge for hat hire. Boots are provided free of charge. Please check the lessons page for descriptions on suitable clothing and footwear.
